The YWCA Bethlehem’s Pop-Up Prom Shop won the AFP Eastern PA Chapter’s 2018 Special Project of the Year Award by just three votes in a two-week online election.

The YWCA Bethlehem’s award was announced and presented during the chapter’s 2018 National Philanthropy Day Breakfast, presented by the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation.

More than 600 votes were cast by AFP chapter members, fans, and friends during the vote from Oct. 15-26. This was the third year in which this decided through online voting. YWCA Bethlehem’s Pop-Up Prom beat out this year’s two other nominees – the #LoveLehighValley project, nominated by the Friends of the Allentown Parks, and the New Bethany Ministries Energy Makeover, nominated by Sustainable Energy Fund.

YWCA Bethlehem has hosted its Pop-Up Shop each year since 2008 to make the prom season more affordable for Lehigh Valley teens and their families. This year’s event featured a stunning inventory of more than 2,000 new and nearly-new donated gowns. The dresses cost $10 each, and there was no charge for accessories such as shoes, jewelry and purses. The event saves families an estimated $50,000 annually.
