Award Descriptions

Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award

This award is presented to an individual or group who either has initiated and/or been involved with a philanthropic activity or has invested volunteer hours on a fundraising project to benefit a specific cause.

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award

This award recognizes an individual or couple who demonstrates exceptional volunteer leadership skills in coordinating and motivating other volunteers for major fundraising projects and exemplifies specific commitment to the advancement of philanthropy.

Outstanding Business Award

This award recognizes the corporation or business that demonstrates outstanding commitment to philanthropy through charitable support in the community, encourages leadership in the community, and demonstrates specific examples of charitable support to the nominating organizations and community.

Outstanding Foundation Award

This award shares similar criteria with the Outstanding Business Award but recognizes the unique contributions of the foundation itself. Public and private foundations are eligible. Nominations should emphasize importance of the foundation’s contribution to the nominating organization and significance of participation in the nominating organization’s mission and effort.

Outstanding Fundraising Executive Award

This award recognizes the fundraising professional who practices the profession in an exemplary manner – as demonstrated by ethical practice, leadership, creativity and strong involvement in the advancement of the profession; demonstrates strong professional background and experience as professional credentials; and exemplifies the professional standards set by AFP, is involved in AFP activities, and currently is active in the field.

Outstanding Philanthropist Award

This award is presented to an individual or family who demonstrates exceptional generosity through direct charitable support to the nominating organization or the community with specific, identifiable results; demonstrates civic and charitable responsibility; and offers a model of generosity that encourages others toward philanthropy and community involvement.

Lona M. Farr, Ph.D., ACFRE, Award of Distinction for a Fundraising Professional

The Lona M. Farr, Ph.D., ACFRE, Award of Distinction for a Fundraising Professional is given at the chapter’s intense discretion to an elite individual who has exemplified throughout an accomplished career the highest standards of excellence and the most critical quality of a fundraiser – the commitment to give of their time, their talents, and their treasure to their fullest capability. By making these gifts, an honoree transcends the traditional role of a fundraiser and is recognized as a peer by the region’s philanthropic leaders.

Each honoree must fulfill the following criteria:
• Work successfully as a professional fundraiser for 25 years or more
• Earn Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) accreditation from AFP
• Give of their time tirelessly as a lifelong learner, AFP member, and advocate for professional fundraising
• Give of their talents freely as an educator and mentor for other fundraising professionals
• Give of their treasure willingly through meaningful philanthropic contributions to community organizations
• Reflect the highest standards of ethical fundraising, adherence to the AFP Donor Bill of Rights, and donor-focused stewardship

Rising Star Award

This award is presented to a fundraising professional with five or fewer years paid experience who exemplifies professionalism and creativity, has documented success in fundraising and a commitment to professional development. The nominee must be a current AFP member.

Special Project of the Year Award

This award is presented to an organization that implemented a special event, marketing campaign, capital campaign, and/or social media project that demonstrates non-profit excellence. The judges will select three finalists and the public will determine the winner based on the results of an online voting campaign. The winner of this award will be announced at the National Philanthropy Day breakfast. The Special Project of the Year should raise community awareness of the organization and advance its mission and play a key role in raising funds for the organization.

Lifetime Achievement Award

This special award presented by the AFP Eastern PA Board of Directors recognizes the extraordinary lifetime achievement of an individual philanthropist whose impact upon our community has been profound, inspiring, and sustained.
